The Inn’s History
The Green Heron Inn was built in the early 1900's as a boarding house that provides shelter and breakfast for
weary travelers. Its location, which combines the beautiful surrounding of the Kennebunk River and the convenience of its proximity to all major Kennebunkport attractions, contributed to its popularity from its early days. That tradition continues today.
Maine is rich with traditions, and here at
the Green Heron Inn,
we have some special ones of our own. Our sumptuous breakfasts are quite
well-known in the area as "quite possibly the best breakfast in Kennebunkport".
Our guests enjoy informal gatherings in the parlor for a game of cards, a movie,
or to work on the jigsaw puzzle.
When the mood strikes, quiet conversation may take place in the fireplace room,
where a fire crackles on cool evenings.
In the morning, relax in a rocking chair on the front porch with a freshly
brewed cup of coffee, read the morning newspaper (distributed free to our guests
during the summer season), and enjoy the cool ocean breeze. And for those who
just have to keep up with the rest of the world, we also provide an internet
station.
While relaxation at the Green Heron is an art in itself, activities abound in the surrounding area.
Take rejuvenating walks along the rocky shore, enjoy the sun on the sandy beach, explore the numerous galleries and shops in Dock Square, watch the wildlife
and the birds as they gather near the water next to our inn, or spend a sunny day on one of the nearby golf courses. Then come back to the inn for some homemade sweets and cookies, lemonade, iced tea, and tea and coffee.
You wake to the gentle call of gulls, white gliders in a sky rosy with sunrise. Just outside the window, a mist rises from the quiet cove where wild ducks paddle and heron stand still as reeds in the shallows.
From the mouth of the Kennebunk River just across the way come boat sounds - a lobsterman chugging his solitary way to the open ocean to haul his traps, a yachtsman gliding out for a leisurely day under sail, a whale watch cruise boat filled with sleepy but eager passengers.
The heady aroma of fresh-brewed coffee and an oven full of baking bread and muffins wafts down the hall to greet you.
It's morning at the Green Heron Inn in Kennebunkport, Maine.......
