If you like rocky coastlines, long walks on the beach, the tang of salt air in the morning, and the romance of the classic English "Country House", then you'll love Kennebunkport and the English Meadows Inn. Kennebunkport's village and port, just an 8 minute walk away, are full of life and in addition to the charming shops and great restaurants, ocean pursuits of fishing, sailing, kayaking or a cruise are amongst the best in New England. Great golf and tennis are also right in the neighborhood.
The English "Country House" experience is at its best in the spring and summer. Between the one hundred year old lilacs, natural day lillies, cottage roses and perennial gardens, something is always in full bloom and our cutting garden supplies fresh flowers for the rooms.
Our two acres of grounds and gardens are a great place to wander about, catch up on a book in a lawn chair, or relax at the end of a busy day. Our eleven bright and airy rooms have a view of the gardens and some have a fireplace which can come in handy with the sea breezes on cool evenings.
Our guests often tell us that breakfast at the English Meadows Inn is a one of the highlights of their stay. In a true English Country House, breakfast was an event and we try to make it special at the English Meadows as well.
Our breakfast menus are strongly influenced by our time spent living abroad where we developed a respect for quality ingredients, learned the value of the right setting for a meal, and the fun of creatively combining the best of in season produce with traditional recipes.
The ambiance of the dining room sets the stage for breakfast. Our tables are generally set for two but family and friends traveling together can be accommodated easily.
Our Victorian dining room with its bay windows and chandelier, is quiet and comfortable. Fine floral china, interesting linens, and elegant place settings are complemented by background classical music and candlelight on the tables.
We try to use local produce and products wherever possible and we generally make everything from scratch. As an example, our sausage comes from a local butcher who makes a unique maple flavored sausage that is perfect with our apple puffed pancakes.
Our breakfast, which is served by our staff, is typically three courses: juice or fruit , freshly baked muffins, scones or breakfast breads and the like, and a cooked entrée. A recent menu consisted of poached pears in a raspberry lime sauce, blueberry stuffed muffins, and individual soufflés of egg, mushroom, asparagus and sausage. Coffee and tea are served at breakfast and also are available at 7:15 for early risers. Special food requirements can be accommodated with advance notice
Lots of activities are available nearby to fill your daily agenda.
There are many shops, galleries, restaurants and historic homes within a short stroll from the Inn. Lovely ocean beaches and rocky coastline drives are only minutes away by car.
In the evening, you can make your choice from a wide variety of dining experiences that will provide a perfect end to a wonderful day.
The Inn’s History
The Inn was first owned by the English family who kept cattle in the attached barn and rented rooms in the main house. Since then it has known seven owners, including the Jacksons.
The barn became a carriage house and was then converted into eight rooms plus a large suite and a small cottage has been added out in the rear meadow. Each owner has left a special mark on the place and has worked tirelessly to keep it looking pristine through the many rugged Maine winters and salty mists of summer.
