Kennebunkport Maine |
Who is Val? She’s a free spirit who travels throughout the United States and internationally. She gathers her images reflective of each environment and interprets
them using either her camera or brush on canvas to create a moving adventure.
After majoring in art and psychology at Bard College, N.Y., she continued her art training at Montserrat School of Art in New England, where she operates her gallery in
Lower Village of Kennebunk, Me.
She has won recognition and awards thru exhibitions and circuit shows throughout the east coast. Her Sandstract Series of photographs is currently being exhibited at the Camden Falls Art Gallery, Camden, Maine.
Val’s connection to the essence of all things, Mother Nature’s creations, inspires her to transform the subject matter into her own vision. Both her paintings and her photographs capture an image which then becomes transformed to take on a life of its own.
The viewer can travel through an imaginary journey and discover new happenings along the way.
Val's summer studio is in Maine, and she spends the winter months painting in the Turks and Caicos islands.

Sand Art - Nature Photography
Mother Nature would perhaps entitle these creations
"SANDSTRACTS".
Her tool being THE OCEAN, and her canvas being THE SAND.
These unique sand art images, captured by artist/photographer, Val Grant, were discovered during one of her favorite pastimes; walking the beaches of New England. The drawings themselves are unique for a brief time only: to be erased by either the natural forces of wind and tides, or destroyed by careless (yet unknowing) beach strollers.
Through her creative eye and keen sense of design, the eye of the camera's lens became Val's tool to create this original form of nature photography.
From the photographic negative to the fine art of the Giclée print on watercolor paper, these abstract images have been transformed to equal the quality of a fine watercolor painting. The only difference is that the artist is Mother Nature.
The titles given to each image portray only what the photographer's impression was at the time of discovery. Some of this sand art depict humor, such as "TWO ON A BEACH", which shows the male and female bodies reclining together. Some are philosophical as the triptych which suggests the "Yin and Yang" and others are symbolic of well known images or events such
as" DEGAS' DANCER" or "THE DAY OF THE DEAD".
Regardless of what each image suggests, they are preserved here for the benefit of your creative imagination, interpretation, and appreciation.
The images are faux deckeled and mounted on museum board.
Valstracts, the name that Val applies to her paintings, is appropriate for the style since it lends itself to abstract surrealism - not truly abstract or surreal, but a combination of the two.
Val paints from her heart, portraying either personal experiences or using Mother Nature's creations to develop a philosophical idea.
Often times she takes an object from the beach or the woods and converts it into a human-like image.
Thought provoking and stimulating the imagination, her paintings evoke a sensuality that appeals to a imaginative, romantic audience.
